Lately, I’ve been on somewhat of a spiritual journey. I felt a call to research different spiritual and religious practices around the world. I suppose that in my search, I hope to find a universal truth of sorts woven into all of them. On my quest, I’ve been doing a lot of reading and researching. When I hear someone mention something I haven’t heard, I do try to educate myself. That’s what inspired me to write this article, or a potential series of articles. Esoteric Earth will be exploring these practices. Maybe you’ll find something your soul resonates with along the way. Pictured here are two of the gods in the Umbanda religion. This practice is most known as a Brazilian one, though its origins come from Africa, making Umbanda share a heritage with Hoodoo, Vodoo, and Santeria, to name a few. Like a few of these on the list, it came to be through the slave trade, which is, to say the least, an unfortunate origin story. In the case of Umbanda, it can also be seen as a tale of triumph in the face of complete annihilation. Slave owners at the time were Catholic and Christian. Oftentimes, they would try to forcefully convert the slaves to the Christian or Catholic faith. Some of this was successful, and many did convert. However, some were able to find a way to preserve their own culture and beliefs. This is why a lot of the goddesses and gods in Umbanda are 1 to 1 with Catholic saints. Iemanjá, the woman statue pictured above, is associated with the sea and motherhood. Because of the intertwining with the Catholic faith, she also became associated with Mary, Jesus’s mother. This sort of “cloaking,” whether it was done on purpose by practitioners of Umbanda to help preserve the beliefs and gods they held so dear or a simple intertwining that happened with time, helped the practices survive and become what they are today. The Beliefs of Umbanda: People who practice Umbanda believe in one supreme deity that created everything, named Olorun, and a robust spiritual world that interacts with our physical world every day. They also have their own pantheon of gods and goddesses, though in this corner of the world they are called Orishas. Iemanjá is one of the most popular, but there is also Oya, who is known as the goddess of the storms, lightning, and wind. We also have the Orisha Osain. He is known as the god of herbs and is associated with herbalists and nature. All the Orishas have their own stories, myths, and personalities of some sort. The ones I have mentioned are three of the most known and powerful ones in Umbanda. The system is detailed, with a lot of important things to remember. Each Orisha has its own colors, numbers, days, and preferred offerings. Beyond the Orishas, the world of Umbanda is rich in spirits, especially the honoring of passed-on ancestors. One very honored and popular group of spirits is called the Old Black Men and Old Black Women. They represent the spirits of passed-on slaves. They are known as benevolent, help guide those who reach out to them, and are one of the most important. As far as spirits go, there are 7 “lines” in the spirit world that also have colors associated with them. There are also many types of spirits, each with a different purpose and role to play. Umbanda rituals are also certainly something to behold. They are oftentimes held in casual settings and can have many participants. To the non-observant, gatherings may even look like parties. The priest or priestess plays drums and sings as part of the ritual. This is to keep negative spirits at bay. Symbols are used to represent certain kinds of spirits, so everyone knows what sorts of spirits are entering the space, which is important in a ritual like this. Mediumship, divination, and psychic ability are highly revered in the practice and important at these events. Using their ability, they contact the spirits, sometimes to help others at the gathering. To remove a spirit, smoke is blown into the ear of the medium on both ends. Oftentimes, this needs to be done with the new mediums, who aren’t used to their abilities yet and may accidentally take in more than they’re prepared to handle. This can also be necessary if a more negative spirit enters the space as well. In Umbanda, the difference between positive and negative seems to be connected to how close the spirit is to “the world,” as it were. More negative spirits will have vices and obsessions like humans do. The more positive ones, like the old blacks, are wise and beyond these wordly desires. They help those who call upon them elevate their lives in positive ways. Everyone participating in the ritual also wears all white clothing and is barefoot. This is because bare feet are meant to connect you with the earth more deeply. Everyone wearing the same color also contributes to a more uniform environment, making it easier to focus. I believe the spirit mediumship is what may unsettle some, especially the eye rolling and the convulsions that have been pictured on tape at some of these rituals. This can especially be unsettling as far as negative spirits are concerned, but Umbanda, for the most part, is more like what we would call white magic. It’s believers who ultimately want to get closer to nature; honor is passed on to loved ones and other ancestors. Most importantly, they use their abilities to uplift and help others. Because of this, it doesn’t deserve an intimidating reputation and is an ancient practice worthy of respect and dignity, especially for all the good it’s done for people in their time of need. Astrology, Free Will and Predestination
One constant in astrology is how powerful it becomes when used retrospectively. These patterns in the sky have been carefully studied across generations, which inspires me to write about them. Growing interest in astrology will never fade because studying what’s above you is a practical idea. On the other hand, some astrologers buy into this study being the embodiment of predestination, believing what’s written in the stars is guaranteed to happen with no free will involved. This viewpoint is delicate, with a lot of room for nuance. A horoscope or powerful transit can speak loudly about future themes without exposing every detail of the experience itself. No matter how accurate an astrologer can be, qualities like hindsight and retrospect will be there to one-up any concept related to fate. Free will and predestination are the same in that both are just outside of our perception. Even as multidimensional human beings, the only thing that we can truly perceive is this moment. Both predestination and free will are always waiting seconds after this current moment, and it’s how you work with the latter that matters. For natal charts, there are three aspects often used that feel like “fate.” Both the North and South Nodes of the moon resonate with soul growth (the north node) and familiarity (the south node). There’s a strong karmic pull in either direction; both aspects are always in opposite signs across 18 months. Any transit or synastry that highlights the North Node may feel like you’re part of something that helps you grow immensely, while the South Node influence feels like something you’ve always known. For the South Node, it’s important to be mindful of familiarity that hinders your ability to grow. The symbol for these placements are shaped like a horseshoe. (☊ NN / ☋ SN) The last aspect is known as the vertex. When energies overlap (conjunct) the vertex in natal charts, an undeniable feeling is attached to the person or experience. For example, a Venus transit over my vertex lets me tap into my artistic side with ease. Mars over my vertex highlights passion and drive, followed by outlets to release built-up energies. From experience, the Vertex always makes for people or encounters that are meant to be significant (regardless of longevity). In Siberian shamanic tradition there is a helpful technique which is called “talking to a stone”; in Sel’kup language stone is called “pul’laka”. Here is what one can do in order to pull yourself from the vicious circle of destructive self-talk over a minor or insignificant issue. Set up an hour or so, go to the Nature or as close as you can get to the wilderness in your area. Greet the place, greet the Spirits of the Land and Mother Earth the way that feels the most appropriate to you. Recognize and verbalize the issue, energies of which you want to ground and release. Perhaps there is a person in mind, and you have unexpressed emotions or words towards that person, the situation they have created, etc. Set an intention to clear up the energies which you experience as repetitive thinking and overthinking, writing and overwriting scenarios of possible outcomes where you are the “winner”. Ask the Spirits of the Land and Mother Earth to help you to find a perfect stone or pul’laka for the ceremony, and start looking for it. Walk around, tune into the energies of the place, let your intuition lead and guide your search. When you see the “right” stone, you feel it: greet the pul’laka, express your gratitude out loud or not. Take your pul’laka, hold it in your hands. Keep in mind that courageous spirit of the stone volunteered to take and release your energetic burden: it is sacred work of the Nature. Hold pul’laka in your hand and start talking to it: describe the situation that bothers you, complain, blame, express anger if there is any, dump resentment, bitterness… if you need to repeat some phrases or words, do it! Keep talking, feel the flow of the energies which are coming out. Perhaps while talking about the issue, a memory of the past similar event or situation pops up in mind, tell pul’laka everything that comes up. If you feel like you need to scream or cry, do it! It’s that time of the year again where people get curious about the winter holidays, especially with Christmas just around the corner. Many of our readers will know about Christmas’s pagan origins, and while people are fascinated, they may not know much about the actual holiday in question or how it’s celebrated even today. What you may already know: Saturnalia is one of the more well-known areas of the pagan origins of Christmas. It is normally mentioned in a negative context, as the tradition was also accompanied by absolute lawlessness. All social rules were reversed during Saturnalia, making all crimes that were normally illegal acceptable on the day. Which at the time was actually December seventeenth, and later from the seventeenth until the twenty-third of the month. However, Saturnalia wasn’t all depravity and horrible acts of debauchery, as some have tried to proclaim. Although they were definitely present, as we were a more primitive species back then, many beautiful traditions have managed to stay in our modern-day culture from this time period and holiday. What did Saturnalia celebrate exactly? Saturnalia, like most holidays during this time, was connected to the winter solstice and harvest. At the time, it was celebrated in honor of the Roman god Saturn. He represented more peaceful times and agricultural prosperity. The Romans believed he was the one to show them how to plant the seeds for a bountiful harvest and how to properly do said harvesting when the crops matured. He also represented prosperity and liberation and was thus quite popular in Roman culture. So naturally, it would only make sense to have a day (later a week) to honor the god they felt kept their bellies full and their lives peaceful and fulfilled. This celebration was one of the biggest and most popular, even compared to other Roman holidays from the same time period. How was Saturnalia celebrated? In a lot of ways, Saturnalia was like completely unclenching after a year’s worth of work. All work was suspended, and like we discussed, rules were eased up significantly. While this definitely enabled questionable things, slaves were treated as equals during this time as well, and all people, no matter their station, were lavished with good food and allowed to wear colorful clothing. Truly, everyone was equal to each other, no matter their background. The spirit of Saturnalia was one of pure pleasure-seeking, joy, and fun, for better or for worse. Everywhere you went, there were festivals, feasts, dancing, gambling, and singing that could be heard and seen. Another thing was gift-giving. The gifts could be compared to a modern-day secret Santa. You could get them from anyone and give them to anyone as well, adding to the free-spirited and fun nature of the holiday. One silly tradition was declaring someone in your household the king, and the other family members had to do what they said for the day. As the celebration wound down, candles and lights were lit in Saturn’s honor. This was the quieter and more divinely-centered part of the holiday. They also reminded everyone that spring and the light would return soon. Surprisingly, candles and lamps were the more popular offerings. Most assume it would be human sacrifice, and while that may have been present courtesy of the time period, it certainly wasn’t common. Food was also given as an offering, which would make sense considering what Saturn represented and how many feasts and drinks are had during this particular holiday. Overall, the celebrations were like a carnival. Fun, happy, and having the right idea or spirit, but certainly chaotic and probably no fun to clean up when the festivities ended. Saturnalia in modern times: Parts of Saturnalia are still in Christmas to this day and are obvious to see. It’s common to drink and have big feasts on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Christmas parties are also still common, as is gift-giving! Although a Santa-like figure wasn’t present in the Roman counterpart, Saturnalia focused more on the free-spirited aspects, while Christmas is about Jesus’s birth and meant to be more chaste and pure. Churches would definitely not approve of celebrating Jesus in such a way. Christmas also lacks the reversal of social norms, or the king for a day tradition. Unfortunately, it may have also distanced itself from everyone of all backgrounds being equal, which Saturnalia based a lot of its celebration on, as many still feel isolated even during the holidays. How can I incorporate Saturnalia into my modern life? As stated above, a lot of it is already present. For my readers looking to spice things up, of course, don’t do anything illegal. You can perhaps get a bit more fun and crazy than you otherwise would, though. Go try that food or drink you never had. Pull that mischievous little prank. If you see someone new, try to talk to them, especially if they seem lonely and left out. In times like these, we need to remember not to take life too seriously. Saturnalia may have taken this to an extreme with public nudity and drinking so much you wouldn’t remember your own name, but we don’t have to do the same. There are ways to have fun and be wild without hurting anyone or endangering ourselves. The other way is to remember that no matter where we come from, how we identify, or what our current economic status is, we’re all humans. Come together with others as much as you can, especially those who would otherwise not be included or don’t have anyone. The fact that all of us are humans at the end of the day and share the same planet seemed very important to the Romans during this festival. It should be important to us as well. Watch out for “Synchronicity Toxicity
Happy Holidays! I wanted to share a message that had been weighing on my heart. Please stick with me, as my article will be a bit long winded and perhaps slightly roundabout but trust me, you’ll understand why that is. The hustle and bustle of the holiday season is upon us, and I’ve noticed that I was picking up on this overwhelming urge to find solace in silence. From Halloween through New Years Eve, there’s an energetic avalanche that most of us experience. It begins with finding costumes and seeking out the best Halloween party to attend. For those with children, there are a slew of Halloween events which is capped off by trick or treating. Thanksgiving is up next and we start flooding the grocery stores. Families travel and gather to watch the Macy’s day parade. We gorge ourselves on turkey and all the fixings. By midnight, department stores and all online merchants are pumping out Christmas propaganda & discount sales. Now everyone is making Christmas lists, over spending and turning their homes into a cozy winter wonderland. This is all in a more mundane sense but in the spiritual community, not only are we tasked with this capitalistic onslaught but we have the added displeasure of being empathic. We know people over spend to fill voids & one thing I’ve learned over the years is that the wrong things have the most value placed upon them & we are a slave to it until we choose not to be. Knowing on a spiritual level that people value things almost more than they value themselves is hard! So many people are struggling with learning how to be decent human beings and on a larger scale, political greed has resulted in multiple genocides being carried out in various places around the world. We know people care less about the well being of others and even less about themselves. They have tunnel vision and hyper-fixate on that bottle of Baccarat Rouge 540, the Chanel purse or the mountain of toys that their kids will play with for only a week. I understand it may sound like I’m on a soap box and I’d be willing to admit I might be but also, two things can be true at once. Humans have an unhealthy understanding of how to prioritize compassion and empathy. Globally, it’s resulting in desensitization and despair. This behavior is has caused millions of lives to be lost. With so many people dying and being abused, sold into human slavery and displaced from their homes, I can literally feel that the spirits are at attention. The world as a whole has collectively understood that we have been blind. It’s as if some sort of cosmic siren has sounded. It is calling you back home to yourself. If you do nothing else this holiday season, refrain from trying to absorb anything that isn’t coming from yourself. The outcome is not the thing to focus on. Actively observing yourself is the challenge. With the access we have to information, it overwhelms us, especially us people in the spiritual community. We are looking for every synchronicity to tie us to our Twin Flame. We are watching every tiktok or YouTube reader to tell us that our life is never going to look the same after December 13th-15th. This is really what I wanted to discuss, the blatant and incessant pandering to those who are not valuing themselves. By hanging onto every syllable your favorite reader spews out, you dishonor yourself by focusing on signs and synchronicity. This is why I didn’t feel called to pump a reading out this month. I feel like there is a very deep call coming from inside the house and it’s telling me to not look without. Not to cast out a single possibility or potentiality. The guidance is that we need to retreat, to really lean on their own inner guidance, god or our ancestors. This massive nudge allows me to reflect & revel in my own essence. I understand how easy it is to fall into the trap when a reading makes mention to something super obscure. It leaves you feeling hopeful for 30 minutes but what you’re not realizing is that by constantly seeking out validation, you are robbing yourself of the gift of presence. Yes, people resonate with my readings and within minutes, people will start seeing or hearing things that align with what I saw or felt. While that’s great, it’s not always because your wish is granted. There is likely a lesson in why you didn’t get what you wanted or why it feels like the cosmos is dangling a carrot in front of your face. You might feel like you were overlooked, you’ll wonder why that person didn’t reach out to you. If you boil it down, it’s because it isn’t what’s right for you. The universe will show you what you want and never deliver it. The reasons for this could be numerous and I won’t pretend to know the mechanics behind it but I’ve experienced it enough times to know this is a very real phenomenon. You might notice certain feeling in your body if you are too fragmented & scattered. For me, I start to feel like my energy beams out of my aura. The best imagery that comes to mind is how the needles jut out of a cactus. You don’t realize how reliant you are on the external validation and the signs, that you don’t ever really develop your discernment. There is no safe bet, only trial by fire. The more we place stock in the answers others give us, the more we will seek out predictions that match our desires but never fully manifest!
