With fall here and dramatic weather fluctuations, we all need a little immunity boost. White pine needle has been used for decades to boost immune function and, in fact, pines have been used by the native Indians here in America for many uses other than health. The needles were used for sewing, while the nuts were included in decorations and added as flavoring for food.
I used to take a walk-through nature or just my backyard and pick my own pine needles and salvage the bark from fallen tree limbs; however, these days, city living makes this harder and harder to do, so I run to my favorite, reliable herb supply shop and purchase from the store directly.
Some of the health benefits of the white pine come from the compounds found within the needle itself. Alpha-Pinene, Beta-Pinene, Beta-Phellandrene, D-Limonene, Germacrene D, 3-Carene, Caryophyllene, and Vitamins A and C. There is also a good amount of Shikimic acid which is what is used in flu medicine. It is also said to help prevent blood clots and strokes, as well as the common cold. Below is just one method I like to use to prepare an immune-boosting tea.
Pine Needle Tea Recipe
Take some of the pine needles, and bark if you can, and mash them together. Using a 6-cup espresso pot (I recommend stainless steel, as aluminum may leak into the infusion), fill the coffee chamber with the mixture of needles and bark, the water chamber with filtered water, then seal and brew. I prefer to add some locally harvested honey to mine once it’s brewed, and I drink it before bed. It can really be a tasty treat that helps keep your immunity strong!
The stovetop espresso pot has a great way of extracting the essential nutrients from the needles and is a quick way to make yourself this healthy, supportive tea.
